This week – Friday April 25th – we celebrate World Malaria Day. On this day, we reflect on the effect of this terrible disease on the lives of millions of people around the world. The impact the disease has on people living in low- and middle-income countries is huge. Each year 600,000 people die from what is a preventable and treatable disease. Each year there are over 200 million new cases of malaria across 97 countries.

However, much progress has been made in recent years in the fight against the disease – death rates have halved and the lives of more than 3.3 million children have been saved since 2000. This means that, now more than ever, it is vitally important that we keep up the pressure and commitment to eradicating malaria once and for all. We are asking our readers to join the online campaign to defeat malaria!

Raise your hands to show your support for malaria elimination, tweet out your support with the #DefeatMalaria and #RollBackMalaria hashtags. Let us know what you will be doing to mark World Malaria day on Friday here, on Facebook or through a myriad other ways online – see the graphic below for more ideas!
