In 2017, Deutsche Stiftung Weltbevölkerung (DSW) ended its direct operations in Uganda, and handed over her mandate to Action 4 Health Uganda (A4HU), a newly registered local organisation. With operations in twelve districts, the A4HU head office in Kampala is located in Lubowa in the same place that houses the State of Art Bonita Training Centre. The organisation is headed by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Sarah Kintu with a six-member Board that provides strategic oversight. Bonita Training Center is a hub available to partners and beneficiaries for capacity-building activities as one of the core mandates of the organisation.

A4HU’s mandate is to complement government youth programming in the areas of Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) with a specific interest in family planning to ensure that youth have access to modern contraceptives in an age-friendly manner. A critical component of A4HU’s work  is economic empowerment, which facilitates youth access to essential resources, including SRH information and services. A4HU collaborates with various partners to maximise impact in the areas of operation and has gathered tremendous experience from eight projects implemented. A4HU has supported over 130 youth clubs to date under 18 Youth Empowerment Centers, which are registered as Community-Based Organisations (CBOs); participated in drafting nine policies at national and sub-national levels, trained 881 Peer Educators; supported the establishment of 110 Village Loans and Saving Associations; skilled 154 youth advocates, supported development of five Family Planning Costed Implementation Plans (FPCIPs); enrolled over 80 schools to promote SRH and Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM).

With the first Strategic Plan of A4HU just concluded, the team is looking to strengthen its vision as it lays out and visualises the next five years.

Our vision remains focused on youth in several ways, including;

  • Advocating for the prioritisation and provision of health services at National and Sub-National levels by establishing an environment that protects the rights of youth and allows them to access health information, education and services that are appropriate, gender-sensitive and youth-friendly.
  • Promoting youth access to SRHR information, services and supplies through capacity building of Peer Educators and Health Workers to establish mechanisms that strengthen the availability and provision of youth-friendly services.
  • Promoting socio-economic opportunities for youth through coaching, mentorship, and developing skills and their livelihoods to increase their ability to meet their needs.
  • Building the organisational capacity of A4HU partner organisations including youth organisations at the state-of-the-art Bonita Training Centre in Lubowa and through mobile outreach services.

“As we move into our next Strategic Plan, Action 4 Health Uganda is keen to visualize what the next five years should look like. Efforts to draft the second strategic plan are in high gear, and clarity of our vision and mission is a top priority. We want to strengthen youth structures like the Youth Empowerment Centers and Youth Clubs for sustainability and autonomy. A4HU has positioned itself to be the authority in the field of Sexual and Reproductive Health for young men and women through targeted and innovative programming in the districts of operation. With the scaling up of TeamUp Uganda and the POWER (Providing Opportunities for Women Entrepreneurs in Health) Pilot Project, we have increased confidence in our partnerships and mandate that we can deliver improved livelihood and boost the skills of young men and women to thrive in their communities while empowering them to enjoy their SRHR. We aim to use more cross-sector approaches to do exceptional work and achieve significant impact.”
