Improving global health has been much on the agenda in recent months, and will continue to be a big issue into 2014. Improving global health is one of the core goals of DSW. In line with our work on sexual and reproductive health and rights we advocate strongly in all our activities for increased and improved innovation for the advancement of combating poverty-related and neglected diseases.
HIV and AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, along with the 17 neglected tropical diseases continue to exact an intolerable burden on people living in the world’s poorest countries. Strong investment in research and development funding to tackle poverty-related and neglected diseases (PRNDs) can have a massive impact in achieving the right to health under the post-2015 framework.
Call to Action for Global Health
Therefore DSW, together with 22 other leading global health organisations from Europe and the USA, have presented a position paper calling on governments, civil society and other stakeholders involved in the development of the post-2015 framework to ensure that any future health goal encompasses R&D-specific targets related to the development of new, safe, effective, affordable and accessible health technologies to fight PRNDs. High Level Event on Global Health
Additionally, DSW together with representatives of civil society and the private sector have convened a high-level panel discussion on innovation for global health to coincide with the European Commission‘s Innovation Convention in Brussels in March 14th.
The event – “Patients’ needs driving innovation in global health” – will focus on what role patients in low and middle income countries can play in developing new responses to treat and eliminate PRNDs – registration is possible here.
