DSW’s Actionable Policy and Budget Monitoring Methodology
Governments in East Africa have made strong political commitments to provide reproductive health and family planning information, services and commodities. Budgets have gone up. Policies follow international agreements. However, these gains are often not felt at the community level. The unmet need for family planning is still high. Advocates and planners need to identify the bottlenecks in transforming national commitments into tangible improvements in people’s lives. This publication explains how to do it. Communities are key actors of this research methodology. They raise community issues and formulate research questions which are then streamlined into health facility assessments, budget analyses, policy analyses, and key informant interviews.

DSW’s Entrepreneurship Development Training Manual
The overall objective of this manual is to equip trainers, civil society organisations, community-based organisations, youth leaders as well as other partners, with the basic concepts of entrepreneurship and knowledge of business planning essential to entrepreneurial success in East Africa. Specifically, this manual is designed to help participants (with emphasis on women and young people): learn how to generate, identify and select business ideas; develop a specific and comprehensive business plan tailored to a person’s individual entrepreneurial needs; and to explore the linkages between an entrepreneur and all the resources needed to successfully launch and sustain a small enterprise.

DSW’s Facilitator’s Module for Civic Education on Governance in SRHR and Family Planning
Often, development projects have transformed communities into passive recipients of aid. Cynics in Uganda joke “gavumenti etuyambe” – “Government help us” when a problem needs fixing. Yet, when communities are politically active, have identified problems, and have asked for remedies, changes are often immediate and sustainable. This publication explains how to improve Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights and Family Planning outcomes by implementing civic education activities. After helping communities understand their health rights, it discusses their civic duties and obligations, identifies formal redress mechanisms, and helps communities to raise their voice.
