World Contraception Day 2014World Contraception Day 2014 went off with a bang on Friday last week! DSW, as always, was a proud partner for the day’s celebration, and are fully behind the goal of WCD: a vision of a world where every pregnancy is wanted. We were especially pleased this year to take part in a wide range of online and offline activities, which we wrap up in a nice little summary below. WCD is not just a day of celebrating family planning and contraception, it is a year-round coalition of partners seeking to ensure that young men and women around the world have access to the protection and information that they need to make informed life choices.

World Contraception Day + GeNext Uganda

We were proud to be able to showcase the excellent work that our DSW colleagues in Uganda are doing as part of the GeNext Uganda “My Life, My Future!” project. Across loacl communities the project has been working for over a year with young people to support and encourage them to become youth champions for sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). These youth champions have gone out into their local communities to spread information and awareness about contraception and family planning options. You can read some of their experiences here.

World Contraception Day Global Report

For the first time during World Contraception Day, this year the WCD partners came together to produce a report on the current state of family planning and contraceptive use worldwide. The report, entitled “Global Perspectives on Unplanned Pregnancies” also included within it a A Framework for Action from the World Contraception Day (WCD) Coalition and a commitment from World Contraception Day coalition partners to encourage young people to build contraception into  their plans for the future and to prevent unplanned pregnancies and sexual
transmitted infections (STIs). You can read the report here.

World Contraception Day Tweetchat

DSW was delighted to be able to participate in the annual World Contraception Day tweetchat this year, which was organised so well by Women Deliver alongside other WCD partners. Have a scroll through the Storify feed below to get a sense of the issues that we talked about, and some of the great ideas that our World Contraception Day partners suggested.
