2020 is set to be a big year for EU-Africa relations, and for global health – even before the Covid-19 emergency. Organisations like IAVI are at the forefront of both leading-edge research, and work on the ground in South Africa, to advance the cause of research and innovation targeted at eradicating diseases of poverty and neglected tropical diseases – HIV & AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and others.
So we’re delighted to have on as a guest on this week’s episode Dr. Anatoli Kamali, Africa Regional Director at the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative. In a wide-ranging and fascinating, we talked with Dr. Kamali about about:
- How medical advances have transformed HIV & AIDS from a fatal diseases to a chronic, manageable condition
- How much more we know now about HIV and AIDS than we ever have before, and about what works – from the early years of ABCs through to advances in mother-child transmission and ARVs, and on to PrEP.
- How these advances are now being applied to the fight against Covid-19
- And how, even as advances have been made, the AIDS pandemic remains a serious global health challenge, one where new infections and deaths from the disease can only be stopped with a HIV vaccine.
