2020 is set to be a big year for EU-Africa relations, and for global health – even before the Covid-19 emergency. Organisations like PATH and The Aurum Institute are at the forefront of both leading-edge research, and work on the ground in South Africa, to advance the cause of research and innovation targeted at eradicating diseases of poverty and neglected tropical diseases – HIV & AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and others.
So we’re delighted to have on as guests a duo in this episode: Prof. Geoffrey Setswe, The Aurum Institute and Sibusiso Hlatjwako, PATH. In a wide-ranging talk, we talked with them about:
- The leaps and bounds being made in small-scale but highly effective testing technologies for HIV and TB that are working in the field in sub-Saharan Africa
- How these advances in testing and other recent medical innovations are feeding into how to track and trace Covid-19’s spread in southern Africa
- And the continuing need for national and international advocacy to support the fight against diseases of poverty.
