Two DSW partner counties in Kenya launched their family planning costed implementation plans while commemorating World Population Day 2018.

The County Governments of Mombasa and Nandi launched their five year family planning costed implementation plans, articulating their family planning priorities, as well as the required budgetary needs.

Speaking at the Nandi County family planning costed implementation plan 2017 – 2021 launch event in Kapsabet town, DSW Kenya Country Director Ms. Evelyn Samba said by launching the plan, the County Government of Nandi has formally committed to provide residents of the county with quality family planning services.

“The Nandi County family planning costed implementation plan 2017 – 2021 is an effective policy document, providing the County Government of Nandi with the basis for making family planning investments through the budget making process,” Ms. Samba added.

DSW provided technical and financial support in development process of the costed implementation plans for the two counties, working in partnership with county health and planning officials as well as other non-state actors in the process.

Family planning costed implementation plans

Family planning costed implementation plans are multi-year actionable roadmaps designed to help governments achieve their family planning goals—goals that when achieved will save millions of lives and improve the health and wellbeing of women, families and communities.

Family planning costed implementation plans help governments to project family planning needs, especially in terms of investment of human and financial resources.

Kenya’s international family planning commitments

In 2017, the government of Kenya committed at the London family planning summit of 2017 that all 47 counties will have a county family planning costed implementation plan by 2020. DSW is supporting 11 counties to develop their family planning costed implementation plan.

So far, four counties (Nakuru, Kilifi, Mombasa and Nandi) have completed developing  and launched their plans. West Pokot, Laikipia, Meru, Nyandarua, Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, and Uasin Gishu are finalising theirs and will be launching them soon.

In collaboration with county governments and other partners in Kenya, DSW is working to contribute to increased and improved funding for family planning by county governments. We work in 11 Kenyan counties: West Pokot, Kilifi, Laikipia, Meru, Mombasa, Nakuru, Nyandarua, Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Nandi and Uasin Gishu.

In a recent newspaper opinion article published in Kenya, DSW Kenya Country Director Ms. Evelyn Samba explained that the costed implantation plans are a potential boost for domestic investment for family planning.

“County family planning costed implementation plans are also effective policy documents, providing county governments with the basis for making investments through the budget making process,” Ms. Samba wrote.

A family planning budget analysis conducted by DSW in 2017 shows that even though counties are investing in family planning, more investments are required.
