Kilifi, DSW’s partner county in Kenya launched its 2017 – 2021 family planning costed implementation plan (CIP) on 11th July 2017.
The County’s acting director of health services Vincent Iduri said thatfamily planning costed implementation plan (CIP) will go a long way in helping in addressing the challenge of low contraceptive uptake in rural areas compared to urban areas.
“The total fertility rate (TFR) we have indicates that every woman in Kilifi has an average of five children, making it difficult to provide them with a good education, and other basic needs. This is a big challenge especially in rural areas where the family planning is yet to gain more roots,” he said.
Speaking during the launch event, DSW’s Advocacy National Team Co-ordinator, Peter Ngure talked about the importance of the plan in tackling challenges concerning access to family planning services in Kilifi.
“Kilifi has had a problem of low contraception uptake of about 34 percent while the national statistics show that it must be at least 58 percent to remain at par with other regions. We are glad that after a series of sensitization meetings, the county government has now allocated KES 5 million towards family planning and its outreach activities,” said Mr Ngure.
DSW provided technical and financial support in the costed implementation plan development process.
Other than DSW, the Kenya Muslim Youth Development Organisation, JHPIEGO, Population Services Kenya, and the National Council for Population and Development (NCPD)supported the process of developing the Kilifi County family planning costed implementation plan (CIP) 2017-2021.
A family planning costed implementation plan (CIP) is a multi-year actionable roadmap designed to help governments achieve their family planning goals—goals that when achieved will save millions of lives and improve the health and wellbeing of women, families and communities.
Family planning costed implementation plans help governments to project family planning needs, especially in terms of investment of human and financial resources.
In collaboration with county governments and other partners in Kenya, DSW is working to contribute to increased and improved funding for family planning by county governments. We work in 11 Kenyan counties: West Pokot, Kilifi, Laikipia, Meru, Mombasa, Nakuru, Nyandarua, Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Nandi and Uasin Gishu.
In doing so, we aim to mobilise more and better funds from key European donors, as well as from East African governments where we work, to support family planning.
