Youth family planning champions mobilised their peers and communities to observe World Contraception Day 2016 in Kenya.

The family planning champions, trained and supported by Deutsche Stiftung Weltbevölkerung (DSW), worked with other stakeholders to plan and execute four World Contraception Day in Uasin Gishu Mombasa, West Pokot, Laikipia and Nyandarua Counties.

The youth called on the national government and county governments to invest in family planning and youth friendly sexual and reproductive health services.

This investment, they argued, would go a long way in helping young people beat HIV, STIs and unplanned pregnancy.

Writing in a newspaper commentary published by ‘The Daily Nation, Kenya’s largest newspaper by circulation, Deutsche Stiftung Weltbevölkerung’s Kenya Country Director, Dr. George Kamau, called on the national and county governments to prioritise youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health.

“Investment in youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services will not only help in reducing teenage pregnancy and HIV infection rates, it will also contribute to improving maternal and newborn health as well as reducing the need for procuring unsafe abortions,” Dr. Kamau wrote.
