Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a horrific practice that causes undue pain, suffering and long term damage to women all over the world. As part of the lead-in to the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, Unicef have released a report which estimates that at least 200 million girls and women alive today have undergone female genital mutilation in 30 countries.

Let’s end female genital mutilation for good

Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting: A Global Concern notes that half of the girls and women who have been cut live in three countries – Egypt, Ethiopia and Indonesia – and refers to smaller studies and anecdotal accounts that provide evidence FGM is a global human rights issue affecting girls and women in every region of the world.

You can read more about the report here, as well as some of the coverage it has received in the media. We have written about female genital mutilation several times in the past, and will continue to work with our partners in our country offices and in our advocacy to end this practice once and for all.
